De kostbare nutteloosheid van de menswetenschappen

Stanley Fish heeft een kleine storm veroorzaakt met zijn stuk met de ironische titel Will the humanities save us? Niet echt, dus.
Op enkele dagen tijd kwamen er meer dan 470 reacties, waaronder heel zinvolle. De kortste, maar meteen ook de mooiste kwam van een zekere Dobosh:

No money in poetry.
No poetry in money.

Je kunt er natuurlijk over blijven doorbomen en dat heeft Fish ook gedaan. HIj verduidelijkt zijn standpunt:
The funding of the humanities in colleges and universities cannot be justified by pointing to the fact that poems and philosophical arguments have changed lives and started movements. ... The pertinent question is, Do humanities courses change lives and start movements? Does one teach with that purpose, and if one did could it be realized?

Kortom:
To the question “of what use are the humanities?”, the only honest answer is none whatsoever. And it is an answer that brings honor to its subject. ... An activity that cannot be justified is an activity that refuses to regard itself as instrumental to some larger good. The humanities are their own good.

Case closed? Ik denk het niet.
